Derby(-shire) Accent

In this paper I want to point out where and what the differences between Standard English and Derby(-shire) accents and dialects are. I will begin with an outline on Standard English and explain what the characteristics of this type of English are. In the major part of this paper, I want to find out why Derby(-shire) English is special and why it does not seem very attractive to native English speakers and listeners. I will refer to the Derby(-shire) and Midlands English, where I want to explain the special characteristics according to pronunciation and phonology.

Finally, I will show differences in lexicology in Derby(-shire) and Standard English. My thesis for this paper is that Derbeians are proud of their accent and dialect because they stick to traditions and try to develop and continue them. So in this paper, I want to elaborate if this can really be said about the Derby(-shire) accent and what makes it special and interesting.
